Also from the "Contributors to the Cause" series, Scott #1560, issued in Cambridge, Massachusetts, honors Salem Poor, an African American hero of the Revolution. Born into slavery, Poor purchased his freedom in 1769. In 1775, he enlisted in the Massachusetts militia and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. His conduct during the battle was so exemplary that several officers commended him for behaving "like an experienced officer, as well as an excellent soldier." This formal recognition was a rare honor for any soldier, and particularly for a Black man in that era. Salem Poor's story highlights the complex and often contradictory nature of the Revolution, a fight for liberty in which many who were denied their own freedom played a crucial role.
